Facilitating a Process Hazard Analysis (PHA) study requires much more than understanding the methodology. A facilitator must be able to guide multidisciplinary teams, ask the right questions, manage discussions, and ensure meaningful hazard and risk evaluation.
This course provides both the technical knowledge and practical facilitation skills required to participate knowledgeably in the studies or  leading the studies effectively.

Topics Covered in the Training:
The course covers a wide range of PHA and risk assessment methodologies, including:
• Process Safety and Risk Fundamentals
• Process Hazard and Risk Analysis background
• Concepts and principles of hazards and risk
• Regulatory framework and industry standards
• IEC 61508 and IEC 61511 overview
• OSHA Process Safety Management (PSM)
Hazard Identification and Analysis:
• Hazard Identification (HAZID)
• Hazard and Operability Studies (HAZOP)
• Batch process HAZOP
• HAZOP revalidation
Risk Analysis Methodologies:
• Bow-Tie analysis
• Fault Tree Analysis (FTA)
• Event Tree Analysis (ETA)
• FMEA (Failure Modes and Effects Analysis)
• Human Error Analysis
Risk Evaluation:
• Risk matrix development
• Risk graph concepts
• What-If and checklist methods
Risk Reduction and Protection Layers:
• Layers of Protection Analysis (LOPA)
• Safeguards and independent protection layers
• Safety Requirements Specification (SRS)
Facilitation Skills and Responsibilities:
 • Terms of Reference (TOR) for PHA studies
• Roles and responsibilities of the facilitator
• Managing multidisciplinary teams
• Practical facilitation techniques
• Lessons learned from real industrial projects

SCAI PRO offers specialized training programs focused on Process Hazard & Risk Analysis (PHRA) methodologies and PHA/HAZOP/LOPA  facilitation skills. (PHRAFA)

This course is designed for engineers, safety professionals, and technical leaders involved in process safety, functional safety, and risk management activities, as well as for anyone interested in developing the skills required to become an effective HAZOP / LOPA facilitator.
Our training programs combine methodology, regulatory requirements, and practical experience from real industrial projects to provide participants with both theoretical knowledge and practical facilitation techniques.

Should a HAZOP Facilitator Understand LOPA?

The answer is yes.

LOPA relies heavily on the information generated during the HAZOP study, including identified scenarios, causes, consequences, and existing safeguards.
Therefore, an effective HAZOP facilitator should understand how HAZOP results are used in subsequent risk analysis, such as LOPA.

A facilitator should also have a working understanding of:

• Risk assessment methodologies
• Protection layers and safeguards
• Human reliability considerations
• Key functional safety concepts

This broader understanding helps ensure that HAZOP discussions capture the correct scenarios and safeguards that may later be evaluated in LOPA.
